The Old 2×4

“God, who is enthroned from of old, who does not change— He will hear them and humble them, because they have no fear of God.”  Psalm 55:19

“Forgive me Lord; I am so sorry you had to retrieve the old 2×4 to teach me THIS lesson! I sat down to write a few minutes ago, all “self-righteous” and began to talk about the wickedness in the world. I am sure I heard God whisper, “You are responsible for allowing the wickedness into your home. You invite it in!”

Yes, I need noise when I am home; being raised the oldest of six children in a home that was always open to visitors might have contributed to it. So, until this very moment, I keep the television on. No excuses, Lord, but I needed that board upside my head to understand. As a counselor I should have realized ages ago that even background noise can penetrate the mind of man (or in my case, women).

The world that surrounds us IS wicked; the prince of darkness – the enemy of God – rules it! Don’t get me wrong; God IS in ultimate control; David’s words above are as true today as they were when penned but satan runs rip shod in the world, every day! You have shown me that a local radio broadcast (WPOV for locals) contains YOUR truth! Beginning this moment, I will invite YOUR word into my home!

Please Lord. You’ve spoken with me, forgiven my careless stupidity and allowed me to make a new, prayerful resolution. Remind me, hold me accountable to Your words and not invite the evil of the world into my home!! In Jesus name, Amen!

Reminders

Reminder

And Jesus said, “All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. ‘Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you’.” John 14:25-27

My memory is about as long as a Twizzler and now they are marketed in “minis,” that size may be even closer. My poor son gets called Mathieu and I believe I could forget my own name; I know I can forget my phone number. If they ever figure out how to implant a webpage I want Bible Gateway to be mine. I can usually bring a passage of scripture to mind when I need it but I hardly ever remember where it is found in the Bible. Maybe I need to do what a friend did (with a hidden smile of course), if the verse came from the Old Testament, he’d refer to the Book of Moses and if New Testament, he’d give a numeric reference from the book of Paul. You’d be surprised how many people; even long-time Christians would open their Bibles and start to look.

The other night I was reminded of something (and laughed to myself); my husband and I sit with our grandson before he goes to sleep and pray together. Rick would pray, then I would pray ending in “in Jesus name I pray,” and for the longest time Mats would say, “Amen.” With his 12th birthday looming, I said, “You know Mats, God would love to hear from you.” To which he responded, “You never finish your prayer with amen so I do.” Last night I ended my prayer with “amen” and Mats prayed the lovely words of a tween.

It dawned on me this morning that the Lord reminds of us things, too. I don’t think I’ve been listening very well, instead I’ve been hearing them through my “you’re never going to be good enough” lens. The Holy Spirit whispered the words of Jesus, ‘Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you’. Not only are we inhabited by the Spirit of God but we live surrounded by Jesus’ peace in the creation of the Father. Hooray – we couldn’t get away from God even if we wanted to!!

“Pull back the curtain of memory now and then.

Show me where You’ve brought me from

and where I could have been.

Lord, remember I’m human and humans forget,

So remind me, remind me again!”

So Simple

“It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for Him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. John 13:1 (…) ‘My prayer is not for them [the disciples] alone. I pray also for those who will believe in Me through their message.’” John 17: 20

Last night Rick and I sat down with our new pastor to “get to know” each other. We have both been lifelong members of the United Methodist Church but, after much prayer, we sense the Lord leading us in a different direction. I believe that in many ways, denominations have made living a Christian life more difficult than it has to be. What do you think?

My heart’s desire is to be a woman of God… straight and simple. I want to hear my Lord say, “Well done, good and faithful servant” one day. I studied hard to become “a work[wo]man that doesn’t need to be ashamed.” I do my best to “love others” and serve God as He calls… none of those things are difficult; they are simple when you love someone! 1 John 4:19 says “We love because He first loved us!”

We are loved; Jesus prayed for me – and for you – it really is that simple!! Why do Christians persist in trying to make living a life for God so tough?

Pray About It

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” II Timothy 3: 16, 17

For many years my Mom and Dad cancelled out each other’s votes but they voted. We were raised with the mantra, “One can only complain about those in office if you voted no matter whether for them or against them. Although the New Jersey primary is too late in the political calendar to really count for much AND, even though I think the Electoral College and our primary system are obsolete and seriously outdated, I will vote in the primary. Who I will vote for still remains a mystery to me both in the primary and the general election but I do know who I will not vote for… unless God shows me different.

I don’t understand how God can ask us to support those in office or how the Lord is always in control or how God’s omniscience works but I know how to pray. For that reason, I remain virtually undecided even when being bombarded with news coverage that is constantly offering their opinions. I pray, pray, read the official candidate webpage and then pray some more. It is becoming increasingly difficult to stand out as a Christian without being accused of offending someone; but I pray! I believe that God will find a way to let me know which lever to pull and, I also believe, whichever candidate becomes our next president… God will still be in control – at least ultimate control.

I’m sure each of us can think of a time when God allowed us to have what we were praying for… sometime for our good and sometime not but the choice was ours. Many of you believe as I do; that the U.S.A. is headed on a direct path AWAY from God but don’t believe – for one moment – we can go along for the ride and allow others to make our choices! God didn’t create robots; he created mankind; He created choice! Yet He also longs to hear from us; desires conversation with us; and is waiting to help us make the right choice; even in our vote!

“Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account.” Hebrews 13:17

Only One

“For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all people.” I Timothy 2:5-6

Easter, Resurrection Sunday, whatever name you give it; in my life it has also been a reminder of how God can always work a fresh start. Yesterday, in the church my brother pastors, a friend of his proposed to his girlfriend… a fresh start for them. Being a baseball fan, I often think of how often the start of the season comes around the same time as Easter.

My husband, grandson and I drove to VA for the weekend to spend time with our son and his family. We all attended church together yesterday; the sermon really touched my heart. The pastor had entitled it “Exceeding Expectations’ and based it on Mary Magdalene’s reaction to the fresh start she had found in Jesus and her response to His single word, “Mary…” in the garden of the tomb borrowed from Nicodemus. Her sorrow turned to excitement in a second; her expectations of completing the painful task of treating the body of her Savior became unnecessary and, the moment, amazingly joyful! Her vision of a bleak, uncertain future became a new start!!

I stopped writing after some painful memories of the writers’ block I’d struggled with when my Mom passed this earth and met Jesus. When my Dad left us and met her to begin their eternity in Heaven; I simply couldn’t face sitting at the keyboard with so much ambiguity of thought – sorrow, loss, confusion and uncertainty about future relationship with my five siblings, and a deep sense of urgency to point my grandchildren toward a life as a child of God. I’ve written a little but not with the desire to please God that I’d always felt; I’ve written in the attempt to give others reason to “fight the good fight!” Yesterday, riding home from VA, I could sense the voice of God speaking to my heart about a “new start” – in not only my writing but my desire to minister as called by my Lord!

“Lord, I love you and I know you are the one and only TRUE GOD… no matter what the world wants to believe! I don’t always understand the paths to You but I know they must ALL go to Calvary and accept the sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus Christ. I sense so much adversity in the world that You have given up to Your enemy. I am a wife, a Mom, a Grammie, a sister, an aunt, a friend and so many other “people” but I AM YOUR CHILD; willing to carry YOUR name to the world!! In JESUS NAME, Amen.”

A Prayer Trust

A Prayer Trust

“I [Jesus] tell you, ‘love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you’,” Matthew 5:44

“Then Jesus told His disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.” Luke 18:1

My husband was playing the “if we had the money we would…” game the other day in the car. He grew up in an upper middle class family as opposed to my lower working class family. His Dad was an engineer at a Philadelphia television station; mine a factory worker in south Jersey but we were both loved deeply and taught, at an early age, to trust in God. While he was spending his fortune, Rick mentioned setting up college trusts for the two of our three grandchildren who don’t already have them. Trusts were never a thought in my family but, I have to admit, it would be a dream of mine too. Just to know that the kids’ education was taken care of; that the money would simply “be there” for them when they were ready. What a great thought!

We Christians do have a trust in Heaven. We are the children of God; we are part of the true royal family. Our HOPE is in Heaven; the promise of an eternity free of hate and tribulation. We will be able to walk down the streets of Heaven with NO FEAR of evil.

But we aren’t there yet, are we? There is evil all around us; some visible as in the bombings at airports and metro stations today in Brussels and some as invisible as the acceptance and validation by Christians of sinful behavior in the world around us. Even worse, many embrace it – silently sin crept into our nation and other nations around the world. As individuals there is much we can do… WE CAN PRAY! We have the Word of God as a prayer trust; never doubt God or His power! Stand firm in the Word; read the end of the Book… GOD WINS!!!

The B-I-B-L-E

Yes, that’s the Book for me!

I STAND alone on the Word of God;

The B-I-B-L-E!
